I recently traveled to The Villages in Florida, the largest and fastest-growing small town retirement community in the United States as reported by Forbes in 2014. With a population of over 50,000 as reported in the 2010 census, the community composed of numerous subdivisions located in Sumter County has experienced a population growth of almost 518 percent. I asked residents to approximate how many people are currently residing in the area and I was told over 110,000. Continue reading

During a late evening visit to our local restaurant, I witnessed a progressive middle-aged couple pleading with their young child to give up a toy she had taken from her playmate’s home. As they were arguing back and forth, loud enough for the entire restaurant to hear, all I could think of was, why bring a small child so late to a restaurant and, for God’s sake, isn’t anybody in charge of their children anymore? The celebration of spring in Romania starts on March 9 through April 23. It coincides with the Orthodox tradition honoring the forty martyred Saints (Mucenici) at Lake Sevastia. The forty Saints were Christian soldiers employed by the pagan Roman Emperor Licinius around 320 A.D. The governor of Armenia, Agricola, who found out about their faith, forced them to pray to his pagan gods. Because they refused and did not give up their Christian faith, the forty soldiers were jailed for eight days, stoned, and finally sentenced to death by freezing in Lake Sevastia. Continue reading
